@ ArtBox

Today i am staying at the artist residency to plan and research, mainly to plan the logistic…bus routes and timetables, how to go places and get back without getting lost, or where it would be interesting to get lost and photograph.

being here is a good way to learn more about the borders. Novi Sad is in the autonomous province of Vojvodina, and Ljiliana of ArtBox has told me how she declares herself as “from Vojvodina” rather than Serb. Belgrade’s government is pushing to take away the autonomy of this province. This came out in a conversation on politics and the balkan war, which to my surprise both Ljiliana and Dragan were keen to discuss (before coming here I was warned ” do not talk politics!): in Backa Palanka i saw posters in support of e “prisoner of Le Hague” Milosevic, Arkan…names that i remember hearing on tv during the balkan war. As i took photos of the posters a group of man from a nearby cafe started shouting at me and i had to leave. Back at ArtBox I discussed this with Ljiliana and Dragan, who say nationalistic feelings are very strong in certain sector of Serbia society. they pointed out how in this suburb of Novi Sad many houses have been built recently by Serbians who relocated from Bosnia during the war, and how these people are often the most nationalistic. Dragan himself was born in Bosnia, from a Serbia mother and father from Montenegro, when the war started in Bosnia him and his family left Sarajevo and resettled here. He did not share nationalistic feelings and did not want to take part with either sides, so he had to leave. many of his friends also left and relocated either here or to Canada. Ljiliana and Dragan also talk about the bombing of Novi Sad bridges by Nato, and how they tried to keep living life normally and recall going to theatre during an airstrike.

Backa Palanka

First stop, Backa Palanka, border crossing with Ilok, Croatia.

approx. 40-45 km from Novi Sad…i photographed near the crossing then followed the Danube, natural border between countries, for some kilometres, as much as i could as the river has flooded certain areas, restaurants and parks were underwater.

@ ArtBox

Yesterday night I arrived in Novi Sad after a long trip, plane from london to Belgrade via Podgorica…with the small inconvenience that from Podgorica the plane had to turn back and emergency land due to a fault, a bit scary!

Dragan and Lily of ArtBox kindly cam to pick me up all the way inBelgrade. ArtBox is in the outskirts of Novi Sad, and it’s a gorgeous building full of their own work. I am the only artist here, which is a bit daunting. However as Dragan and Lily both have their own practice, the residency seems a very good place to exchange ideas.

Today i will go around Novi Sad and spend sometime planning and researching my project

work in progress 6

This portrait was taken in Marasia, last village on the greek border with Turkey.
How do i photograph people? I always carry a piece of paper with written in the local language what my project is about (in this case i had it written in greek). I also always try to learn few works, the basic to say hello and introduce myself.

in preparation for going to Serbia in June I am scanning all my negatives (a looooong and boring process) and I am starting to plan a website, to create an online archive of border identities.

Here 2 more images photographed in Nicosia last september.

The next summer I will be for a month at Art Box Artist Residency near Novi Sad, Serbia, which I will use as a base to photograph the borders between Croatia-Serbia and Croatia-Hungary. The border Croatia Serbia is of particular interest to me as Croatia is about to join the EU whilst Serbia has applied but is not joining yet. I aim to continue portraying the people and communities who live along the borders and the spaces they inhabit. I have been awarded a Step Travel Grant by the European Cultural Fund.
My aim is to create an online archive that collects images of european identity.

images from Cyprus…i took this image at the seaside, in the exact point where the land meets the sea in the southern part of the island. Famagusta and its ruins are visible from here in the distance. This is the precise point where the buffer zone starts
