the borders of Europe

This is a video I found on the website of italian newspaper La Repubblica, it shows Europe (as continent not as EU) has changed over the past 1000 years: how wars, invasions and political deals have changed borders. Some readers have pointed out imprecisions in this video, however I find this timelapse very interesting has it shows how much the continent has changed, how often borders are established for political reasons with disregards of the populations and the communities that live along them.

similarly the BBC published these maps in which it traces the shifts in beorders within Europe. The artcle refers mainly to the EU, whilst the maps refer also to Europe as continent. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/europe/02/euro_borders/html/

“The decline and fall of Europe”.

after all the walking of the last 2 days, i am at ArtBox resting, reading and researching today.

I am reading a copy of the “Time” magazine (http://www.time.com) from 2 years ago, I found it in my parents’ house just before coming here in Serbia and I took  it with me as it has the interesting title “The decline and fall of Europe (and maybe the west)”.

It is an old magazine  (my parents tend to heard stuff) and wha makes it even more interesting is comparing what was published 2 years ago to the situation today.  It is dated August 22, 2011 and it has on the front page an image of the London’s riots.

Here some extracts:

“The European Union and the euro zone were supposed to bring about economic stability and remove traditional barriers to growth…it’s become a selfish union in which flailing economies feed raising nationalism…”

and also:

“Why should prudent Germans…have to rescue a bunch of spendthrift, book cooking Greeks and Italians?…”

Doom & Gloom.

It is a long article on the financial situation, markets, nationalism, instability and anger., and the potential collapse of the EU.

2 years on, however, the EU is still standing.

In England, where i live, sometimes I read about this or that politician threatening to get the UK out of Europe, which makes me wonder what would i do, would i stay? or go back to italy? I would not want to live in a country where i need to ask “permission” to be in.

In the meanwhile, Croatia has joined in, the Uk is still in, Greece has  thankfully not been booted out, while in Turkey, an aspiring member, there are violent riots.

I am not an economist, but I read with interest as it always surprises me how the belonging or not belonging to “Europe” in its political configuration seems to be determined by the economy and politics rather than a common cultural ground.

here a list of photographers that inspire me in this project. Various styles, very different one from the other and very different from my work, but all which i like.

Along the Danube-2

Another day in the area of Backa Palanka walking along the Danube. Disappointingly i didn’t meet many people.

walking along the river reminds me one of my favourite photographers of all times, Alec Soth “sleeping by the missisipi”

Along the Danube

Today i returned to Backa Palanka, i didn’t cross into Croatia but instead I remained inSerbia following the Danube, photographing mainly landscape for 10km. Tomorrow i aim to do the same in the opposite direction.

The Danube, a natural border between the two countries, is such a imponent physical presence on the landscape of the region.

Photography magazine Landscape Stories is dedicating its issue 12 to the theme of ” The River” http:// www.landscapestories.net

Having returned to ArtBox, i’m having a quiet weekend before i set off again to photograph the border with croatia from tomorrow.

I am doing a lot of reading, such as http://listverse.com/2011/09/02/top-10-controversial-territorial-disputes/

photographing borders involves politics : i realize it more and more as i progress with this project. Of course, i knew that in Cyprus last year. But my initial interest was not political, my motivation is find out who we are and how the territory in which we live shapes us, or how we shape the territory. I find it bizarre how “territory” means that people immediatly take a political side, reading the comment to the article above ( the article itself it is not so excellent and forgets various contended borders …) i find it bizarre how people have strong opinions over the belonging of a far away land that they have never visited.

Back in Novi Sad

Back in Novi Sad, in the comfort of  ArtBox…after so much going around i am glad to be back here for few daysof rest and research, before starting photographing again.

on my way back i stopped shortly in Belgrade, and got caught in an argument between and old man and a girl on “great serbia”… On the bus. I could not understand much, apart from the names of nations/ethnicities they were yelling…i was very curious, but also slightly embarassed as i was sitting between them!
