european elections

as I took my exhibition down and started preparing for more border-photography in summer, the elections for the European parliament are on. I voted and noted that most of the parties on the ballot paper were against-EU, which seems to be sadly  in-fashion nowadays…

Photographs taken along the buffer zone that splits cyprus in 2. Taken in 2012. Particular thanks to the ministry of culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the United Nations.
2 things stayed in my mind: how time stopped and many areas were unchanged since 1974. And how, despite the difficult situation, Cypriots have retained a great sense of humor: in Nicosia next to the “green line” there is a kebab shop called “The Berlin Wall” (it’s garden ends in the fortified wall of the division) and also, near a checkpoint, there is an underwear shop called “No Border Underwear”

an interesting article…

An interesting article by writer Nicolai Lilin,  published in italian, that disucsses the current socio political situation in ex-soviet countries, in light of recent tensions in Ukraine. It highlights how in all easter europe and ex-soviet countires “citizenship” and “nationality” are extremely separate concepts, in which “nationality” often reflects “ethnicity”.

This is very interesting if we consider that  for example in Latvia there is a high percentage of people who are russian ethnics and are not allowed to use Russian in public places.
